Hungarian PM hopes EU allies back Budapest in opposing Ukraine's EU bid

The government of Hungary has been vocal against Ukraine’s fast-tracked accession to the European Union

BUDAPEST, June 6. /TASS/. Hungary is determined to prevent Ukraine's fast-tracked accession to the European Union and expects support from its EU allies on the issue, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a morning talk program on Kossuth Radio.

While "there is a huge cohort of more than 30,000 bureaucrats in Brussels" who put pressure on other countries to push them into launching Ukraine’s EU membership talks, Orban argued, opinion polls show that a majority of citizens in 11 out of the 27 EU member countries, including in France and Germany, is against expediting Ukraine’s accession, with only ten countries strongly supporting such a move. "Therefore, I think that Ukraine’s membership in the European Union can be prevented if we put up a united front," he said.

The government of Hungary has been vocal against Ukraine’s fast-tracked accession to the European Union. A nationwide referendum on the subject continues in the country, and Budapest’s further consultations with Brussels will be based on its results.
